I've never been good at writing about myself and feel my playing speaks for itself. My vocal style is frequently compared to Nina Simone, P.J. Harvey (I disagree on this one), Chrissie Hynde, and Grace Jones. Vocalists who have had the most influence on me are David Sylvian, Mark Hollis, and Cy Curnin.

As a bassist I'm known for fretless and 2-string slide bass. My fretless playing is strongly influenced by the New Romantic and post-punk bands of the early 80's, such as Japan, Duran Duran, Simple Minds, The Fixx and Talk Talk. From my teen years to the present, improvising to a variety of Indian, Arabic, and gypsy music continues to shape my sound. I often utilize loopers, and a variety of effects, but enjoy playing totally dry just as much.

It was the music of Morphine and their front man Mark Sandman, who turned me onto the 2-string slide bass. Over the years, however, my style has evolved from the blues and jazz influence heard in Morphine, to something leaning more toward post-punk and desert rock.

I have a new full-length solo record due for release on DPulse Records in March 2026. I don't think it's necessary to get into my past touring and recording experiences here. It's best you just explore my music at moniqueortiz.com . I've provided some basic info below for context and reference. You can also find most of my music on all the usual streaming platforms.
