I will manually adjust the levels of your tracks to a nominal level that is ideal for mixing to provide consistency and headroom, as well as aligning the phase of any multi-mic'd or layered sources. This way you or your mixing engineer will be starting off from an optimum point of reference and can get right to the creative work. Think of it as a pre-mix master.
While respecting the dynamics of the song, I will automate vocal clip gain levels so that there aren't any phrases or words that poke out or get buried. This will allow you to dial in a compressor more easily without having to worry about sudden peaks or weak phrases that don't get picked up. I will also balance any stereo tracks, such as doubled rhythm guitars and set the overall levels so that you can start with the best raw sound possible.
Additionally, I will also adjust the phase of any tracks where it may become problematic such as live drums or layered tracks from the same source (such as re-amped guitars). This goes beyond just flipping the polarity switch on the channel, I will manually adjust the waveforms against each other to find the ideal phase relationship between all the corresponding sources.
