🎬 ULTRAMAN — OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO This one represents a major step forward for JDRUMS FILMWORKS. “Ultraman” was written years ago by my friend and collaborator Justin Sheehy, and recently we brought the song back to life with an entirely new production built around Justin's original writing and vocal identity. For the film, I wanted to try something considerably harder than a traditional AI-generated music video: Could we create a convincing live-band performance that actual musicians would believe? Not simply lip-sync a singer—but build a consistent three-piece band and have the musicians physically respond to the recording. That meant directing and refining: 🥁 Audio-reactive drum performance — kick, snare, hi-hat, cymbal and fill movements following the actual musical performance. 🎸 Guitar and bass performance synchronization — believable picking, strumming, fretting, rhythmic movement and instrumental interaction. 🎤 Lead and backing vocal synchronization — including moments where the entire three-piece performs vocally together. 🎬 True multicamera concert coverage — stage cameras, audience perspectives, close-ups, wide masters, moving cameras and crane-style shots edited around the musical arrangement. 👥 Character and performance continuity — maintaining the same three musicians, wardrobe, instruments, stage positions and visual identities throughout the concert. And perhaps most importantly, adding the small human behaviors that make live footage feel lived in rather than generated: musicians watching one another, reacting to musical changes, the crowd responding imperfectly, and the drummer simply standing up when his part is finished. The finished film was constructed through a hybrid process involving generative filmmaking, character and performance direction, audio analysis, scene-by-scene refinement, alternate takes and traditional editorial decisions. It wasn't a “make me a music video” button. It was much closer to directing a virtual concert shoot. And that distinction matters to me. I've spent my life as a drummer, producer and musician, and increasingly I see these tools the same way I've viewed drum machines, sequencers, digital recording and editing throughout my career: technology doesn't have to replace human creative intent. Used deliberately, it can become another instrument for expressing it. That idea has particular meaning on this project because Justin is living with MSA-C, a progressive neurological disease that has severely affected his ability to perform music traditionally. Technology didn't write Ultraman. Justin did. And today, decades after he originally wrote it, we were able to put him back in front of a band and let the song live again in an entirely new way. That's the possibility in this technology that interests me most. Not replacing artists.
