For this project, I was brought in to mix and master a record by Richmond hip hop duo Cult Classic, featuring emcee Sonny Kolfax and producer Akai Phifer.
The production already had a strong foundation, so my primary focus was giving the vocals the presence, clarity, and character they needed to sit naturally in the track without sacrificing the warmth of the sample based production.
The creative direction blended the soulful, organic feel of early A Tribe Called Quest records with the hard hitting, modern aesthetic found on many Griselda releases. My goal was to preserve the grit and authenticity of the performance while creating a balanced, punchy mix that translates well across headphones, speakers, and streaming platforms.
Both the artist and producer were extremely happy with the final result, and the record became a great example of the collaborative approach I bring to every mix: enhancing what's already working while solving the elements that keep a song from reaching its full potential.
