So many engineers have just learned to use plugins effectively. But I mix the way I sing: I tick the technical boxes, but only so they can serve the story and journey in the track.

Ten years as a lead vocalist singing a breadth of material on huge stages internationally, including West End shows such as Wicked and Mamma Mia, means I've heard thousands of vocals from inside the booth and on stage, and that changes how I mix them - I know what a vocal needs to actually sit right, not just read clean on a meter. My experience speaks for itself: vocal-heavy material ranging from pop and singer-songwriter sessions to full musical theatre cast album, a feature film score.

I work with a mixture of analogue & digital out of a treated home setup: typical vocal chain would be a Neumann TLM 107, Neve 1073 preamp, SSL 2+, all running through Logic Pro.

Whether it's a single vocal that needs polishing or a full mix built from stems, I'll get it sounding exactly how you always wished it would.
