Biography
Richard Patrick Papa, Jr., has been playing guitar for 35 years and is well versed in all styles of music. Citing diverse and eclectic influences ranging from big band to heavy metal, Papa’s original compositions propel the unique sound he has carefully cultivated over his three plus decades as a sought after guitar player, composer and arranger.

As a young musician Papa’s exceptional ability was honed by nontraditional means. The four years spent travelling during his service in the United States Air Force contributed greatly to his appreciation of musical diversity. He completed his studies by consuming the master books of Mr. Mel Bay And the Berklee Music Theory books 1&2. This early exposure helped hone Papa’s natural ability as both a master guitar player of all genres as well as an accomplished arranger and composer.

Possessing the instinctive ability to mimic a chord progression and arrangement, Papa demonstrates an uncommon talent to deconstruct a composition by ear. He is widely recognized for his exceptional and diverse guitar playing and his expertise in lending refinement to a composition. Papa’s dynamic arrangements punctuate a song and provide unique sonic styling that builds from the basement to the penthouse.

Credited on over 300 recordings ranging from acoustic instrumentals to heavy metal and alternative rock, Papa has earned the respect of his peers. His highly regarded work ranges from stellar guitar performances to complex compositions and unusual arrangements that have distinguished Papa’s recognizable signature sound.

His accomplished body of work is rounded out by the meaningful contributions he made as a staff writer and technical advisor for the former Boston Sound Check Magazine, a multi-media regional publication. Papa penned a monthly column, “The Rack Space”, which drew readers and musicians alike in pursuit of advancing their guitar skills. The Rack Space quickly became a “must read” feature and generated a robust following.

Papa’s mentoring guitar players is not limited to print. He has been teaching guitar and music theory privately for over 25 years. His easy laid-back “have fun” approach encourages students to play with a smile on their face and excel at their c
