Kevin Mankins — Kevin Mankins is an Ocean Beach, San Diego–based music producer, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and audio engineer whose work bridges raw coastal songwriting with heavy, analog-driven beatcraft. Operating out of Cape May Sound Lab and Osprey Recording, Mankins is the primary songwriter and producer behind the collective Song and Salt, carving out a distinctive sonic lane dubbed "subterranean surf-hop psychedelia"—an organic collision of coastal Americana, heavy dub, roots reggae, deep low-end grooves, and expansive psychedelia.

Mankins’ connection to music began with the human voice, singing in church throughout his youth in the Pacific Northwest before sharpening his dynamic range and harmonic intuition in high school choir. That early choral training—instilling an instinct for four-part arrangements and dense, resonant vocal stacks—later converged with an unconventional technical background: nine years on active duty in the United States Navy as a sonar technician (STG2), studying acoustic wave propagation and low-frequency physics in high-stakes environments, followed by a degree in Audio Production from Full Sail University. The result is a production style defined by an acute ear for spatial depth, frequency separation, and visceral, pressurized low-end.

On stage, Mankins sidesteps standard singer-songwriter conventions with a high-energy live hybrid format. Anchoring the room from behind the keyboard, he sings lead while driving the set with punchy, custom-programmed beats and hands-on SP-404 performance sampling. The format moves like a live soul-dub session: fluid keyboard voicings and soulful, choir-rooted vocal melodies carry the emotional weight of a lyricist, while heavy rhythms deliver the kinetic pulse of an underground beat set across Southern California stages like Winstons Beach Club, Aquarius Bar & Grille, and The Holding Company.

In the studio, Mankins operates as a borderless arranger, directing and collaborating with master session musicians across the globe via remote platforms like AirGigs. By weaving live international strings, expressive brass sections, and regional fretwork directly into his productions, he marries worldwide organic musicianship with raw West Coast beat production. This expansive palette anchors Song and Salt’s upcoming 11-track studio album, Lit Beacons. Engineered and produced at Cape May Sound Lab, the record captures Mankins in full creative stride—layering rich global instrumentation and choir-rooted vocal harmonies over deep coastal grooves and subterranean bounce.
