One of the most versatile and in-demand bassists in New York City, John Gray brings years of experience and training to whatever professional musical situation he finds himself in. Whether it's playing classical and jazz bass backing up world-renowned pianist Xiayin Wang in a performance at WQXR, or playing funk and R&B bass backing up Broadway legend Vivian Reed, or leading his band John Gray and The Jazz Thieves at the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, John brings a focused, passionate creativity and a sharp sense of professionalism.

John has been a resident of New York City since 2005. He has been working as a professional bassist, composer, bandleader and educator since he arrived. John has been a fixture on the NYC Jazz and pop/songwriter scene, and can often be seen playing at venues like Rockwood Music Hall, The Cutting Room or The Mercury Lounge.

In his career, John has played with jazz luminaries James Moody, John McNeil, John Stetch, Wayne Bergeron, and has also performed with LA session Guru John Philip Shenale, the singer-songwriter Kris Kelly, and is a member of the country/folk/pop group Single Girl, Married Girl.

John is the bandleader and composer/lyricist/bassist for John Gray and The Jazz Thieves; they have played extensively in NYC and across the US. Their most recent release "Brooklyn Elegy" was a 4 star track of the day on AllAboutJazz.com, and was featured in the Spring 2017 issue of JAZZIZ Magazine, and received international radio airplay and critical acclaim.

John also has a passion for education. John teaches private lessons, group classes, masterclasses, and ensemble coaching for jazz and rock/pop groups.

John is a graduate of the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, having graduated with a bachelor's degree in 2009.
