Dave Kobrenski is a professional musician and recording artist with twenty years of experience performing, recording, and teaching. He specializes in the music of West Africa, and spent two decades traveling to places like Ghana and Guinea to study with master musicians. For more than a decade (and counting), he has apprenticed with a master of the Fulani flute tradition named Lancine Condé. Through him, Dave has become proficient in both playing and making these unique African woodwinds.
Between 2001 and 2012, Dave studied extensively with master djembefola Famoudou Konaté in Conakry, Guinea, and with numerous other musicians from the region. He developed strong skills on the djembé (hand drum) and dununs (bass drums played with a stick) and became proficient in the musical repertoire of the Malinké people.
During his cumulative three years living in West Africa, Dave also learned to play the kamale ngoni, a ten-stringed lute-harp that originated in Mali, and the balafon, a wooden xylophone with calabash resonators. For more than a decade, Dave has performed and recorded with these instruments, adding their dynamic sounds to his compositions and musical collaborations.
Technical Skills
Dave has used Logic Pro for more than a decade. He learned microphone placement technique and recording theory from Berklee College of Music professor Randy Roos. Over the years, Dave has assembled a versatile locker of beautiful microphones to ensure the right sound for every instrument and project.
