Slick City Beatz·Thursday, January 4, 2018
It all started when he was 9 years old. SlickCity began taking private lesson on the clarinet at the Levine School of Music. His first concert was in front of Hillary Clinton and Marion Barry playing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” SlickCity’s uncle (Earl Jones RIP), that was living with him, had a trumpet and a little electric keyboard at the house. He taught himself how to play both instruments from taking what he learned from the clarinet lessons. (Writing each note on each key of the keyboard) From there his life was devoted to music.
SlickCity began to progress playing the clarinet through middle school. Being more advanced than other students. Then he auditioned and got accepted to attend the Duke Ellington School of the Performing Arts High School. There he participated in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Concert Band. Went to Paris, France and the UK with the bands and ensembles as a freshman. By sophomore year he was in the first chair of the clarinet section and was asked to be in the jazz ensemble to play the clarinet and tenor sax.
In 2000, his mentor in H.S. bought him a Yamaha keyboard for christmas. Then he started making his own rhythms and beats on it. SlickCity started playing for a couple local (Go-Go) Bands playing the keyboard. That's when he started really getting into playing the keyboard even though it was not his major. When he was a senior, he faded away from playing the clarinet. He had some family issues then moved out to Virginia from D.C.
After having a family and other things, he wanted to get back into his music. And take it to another level. So he first bought himself a MPC2500 and then learned how to use it. Learn how to sync MPC with protools via MIDI. As you see, he started making beats from there. SlickCity really started taking this producing thing really serious. Spending nights looking at Youtube videos of just about everything that had to do with producing. Produced a couple of songs. SlickCity kids love every moment when they hear something that he made. That's who keep him abroad, focus, and motivated. His fiancé is really the one who pushed him to do this.
His goals is to be a very influential producer, stating that if you have a passion and love for something, you can pick it back up and elevate. Just have to keep pushing hard.
