American soprano Kavita Baliga has sung and conducted choirs in a wide variety of projects around the U.S., Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany, and India with repertoire ranging from Opera, Art Song, Musical Theatre, Jazz, and Bollywood. The classically trained singer earned her Bachelors in Music degree in vocal performance from The University of California at Irvine, and Masters in Music degree from The Boston Conservatory.
The versatile singer began session singing in India in 2008 for Indian film and fell in love with the process. Her most notable session work has been with Oscar/Grammy winning composer A.R. Rahman and has sung in the background scores of Indian films such as "Yuvraaj", "Ghajini", "Blue", and "Jab Tak Hai Jaan", but she is most known for singing "Moi, je nage dans l’espoir" and "Lux Aeterna" from the film "Passage", directed by Shekhar Kapur with music by A.R. Rahman. The film premiered as an accompaniment to a sculpture exhibition at the Swarovski Kristallwelten museum in Austria. She also conducted the KMMC Chamber Choir for the "In Memoriam" segment of the 2012 Oscars.
She has worked with some of the world's best such as mastering engineer Alan Meyerson, and arranger Matt Dunkley, and has shared the stage with incredible names like Shankar Mahadevan. Her largest audience was 40k at the Vieilles Charrues festival in France with the Olli Goes to Bollywood team whose album she's featured on 9 out of 10 tracks.
Her voice is sweet, soft, and airy. Her floaty, ethereal sound is an asset to film scores and ambient tracks and her versatility in style gives film composers an advantage to try different ideas. She's also experienced in conducting session choirs for ads, jingles and scores.
"What I love the most about session singing is the intimacy and collaboration. Sometimes you go in and you just execute what you're asked to do. But sometimes the composer will experiment, or try to get a different flavor out of your sound. Those are incredibly inspiring moments. It's exhilarating."
