Airplanes
“The idea for the song came after a conversation with my mom,” says vocalist Birgitte Hellwig.
“She said:
‘Birgitte, you write so many songs about how things will get better someday — but why don’t you write one about how it feels when things are already good?’
It really struck me, and I think I needed that reminder. Because at that time, I actually was in a place where life felt really good. Not long after that conversation, Airplanes was born.”
The song blends a soft, atmospheric soundscape with elements of folk and Americana. The vocals are carried by warm harmonies, and the lyrics — as always with Chaos and the Calm — are poetic and open.
“We tend to use a lot of metaphors in our lyrics,” Hellwig continues.
“Airplanes isn’t really about flying or traveling — it’s about perspective. About seeing things from above, and feeling that you’ll land safely, even when the wind is strong. That you may have been following a path that wasn't right for you, and when you finally let go of that, the gravity that once held you down, disappears. And that above the clouds, the sun is always shining.”
Airplanes Lyrics:
We’re up here
Flying like aeroplanes
We’ve been following routes
Now we’re painting our own lane
And I wouldnt know just how sweet it all would taste
So I thank all the lows cause I know it was not a waste
The gravity’s gone
And I’m taking off into the sky
I’ve been cutting the ropes
And I’m leaving it all behind
Now we’re surfing the clouds
So I dont even care if it rains
Now we’re up here
Flying like aeroplanes
I stood there
Gazing out on the view
I needed a change
Though changes were all I knew
So I closed my eyes and decided what to see
Now all of the highs I imagined are here with me
The gravity’s gone
And I’m taking off into the sky
I’ve been cutting the ropes
And I’m leaving it all behind
Now we’re surfing the clouds
So I dont even care if it rains
Now we’re up here
Flying like aeroplanes
I wandered the roads
Like a castaway
I cursed the wind
And I cursed the rain
But I finally found
A new point of view
The gravity’s gone
And I’m taking off into the sky
I’ve been cutting the ropes
And I’m leaving it all behind
Now we’re surfing the clouds
So I dont even care if it rains
Now we’re up here
Flying like aeroplanes
We’re up here
Flying like aeroplanes
