The Story Behind the Song

Inspiration can come from the most unexpected places. For songwriter and vocalist Birgitte of Chaos and the Calm, the spark for this song appeared while watching an episode of Sex and the City. In the scene, Carrie realizes that she and Mr. Big simply want different lives — he seeks something safe, predictable, and steady, while she longs for freedom.
Birgitte recalls:
“I had to write down what Carrie’s voiceover said as she turns away from Mr. Big, walking down the street and passing a horse rearing wildly on its hind legs:
‘Maybe some women aren’t meant to be tamed.
Maybe they need to run free, until they find someone just as wild to run with.’
It hit me so deeply that I had to rewind and watch it again. That feeling — the desire to live freely, without restraints, expectations, or limits; outside of what’s considered ‘normal.’ And the realization of how lucky I am to have found someone who wants that same kind of freedom.”
She explains that they wanted the sound of the song to mirror that feeling:
“A galloping energy through an open landscape — raw, untamed, full of motion and liberation. A sense of us against the world.”
Through the song, Chaos and the Calm hopes to reach the hearts of those who crave that same kind of freedom — and those who have found a soulmate or best friend with whom they can be their wildest, truest selves.
