Fallow
This is the first single released from the duo project Chaos and the Calm. I usually write both the lyrics and melody, but interestingly - on this song I only wrote the lyrics.
Our guitar player already had written all the music and the topline and had only one word in mind that was supposed to land on the punch line of the chorus: "Fallow" (because he thought it was a beautifully sounding word".
So the challenge here was to write a story around the word "Fallow" which became the leading star of the story.
The lyrics tells a story about a year in the life where you've worked hard and done everything you can to succeed in something, but you are left empty-handed and tired, with nothing in return for all the hard work.
But you still hold on to the belief, that the next year will bring all the fruits of your hard labour.
Fallow lyrics:
The ground has frozen rough and cold
Head is bowed and hands are fold
Got one reason to stick around
But lots of bad to stay in this town
They say that what you reap you’ll sow
And that patience lies beneath the snow
My back is burnt and feet are sore
All I hope is there’ll be more
I planted a hundred seeds
And I prayed for rain
But all my rivers running shallow
But there’ll be more for me
In the year to come
And I’ll be waiting like the fallow
Once upon a different scene
We lie down in red and green
Covered by a sky of stars
And time would be only ours
I planted a hundred seeds
And I prayed for rain
But all my rivers running shallow
But there’ll be more for me
In the year to come
And I’ll be waiting like the fallow
