Live at the Music House
The Voyage Trio took on its name because this concert was the maiden voyage of this group. I had been friends and musical buddies with Aaron since 2002. Taylor I met the day before this show in a quick rehearsal. It was instantaneously a great connection. I had been hearing about Taylor for a long time so when he was available to play the gig I was excited and soon realized why I’d been hearing great things about him.
Tune one is “Everything I’m Not” by KCs own Forest Stewart, (great elec bass player.. check him out). The tune is a contrafact on the standard “All the Things You Are”. But unlike the original he wrote it in 7/4, so we had so fun with that!
Tune two is the standard “The Masquerade is Over” by Allie Wrubel written in the 1930s. We took it at a relaxed tempo to see what kind of interplay would happen and we’re pleased with the result. Those chord changes sure are fun to navigate.
Tune three is the classic Coltrane “Lazy Bird” from 1957. We played it straight eighth instead of swinging. It was a fun challenge with those tricky chords moving all over the place from key to key.
Tune four is “Walk Her Home”, also by our friend Forest Stewart. An emotional ballad with beautiful melody. And with chords like that all you have to do is play inside the changes and everything takes care of itself.
Tune five is by Aaron and titled “One for George”. Seems like if Wayne Shorter and Kenny Wheeler had a child it would be this tune. Harmonically fun and challenging.
This concert was held at the Music House in Prairie Village, KS where Aaron is the founder and owner. We also recorded video and these vids will be available on my youtube channel soon (www.youtube.com/@CraigAkinOnBass).
The recording engineer was Clark Russell, a student of KU at the time. Mixing was done by my buddy JP Ruggieri from Nashville, and mastering by Joel Arnow from New York.
