Purest Expression

Purest Expression

This album came about by chance. I had just moved back to Finland from England and met up with an old bandmate of mine. We had some drinks and showed off our accumulated musical skills. By accident the song "Bittersweet" was born and we started making more music, until after a few months we realized we'd made an album.
The music was heavily inspired by 90s/00s electronic music across different genres while also listening to more modern artists and adding spice from rock/pop music that we liked.
I played bass on tracks 4, 8 and 9, on other songs a mutual friend came in to play. We also added a pianist for tracks 4 and 11, and a saxophone player for 4, 7 and 10. Because most of the electronic music we were listening to had female vocals, we naturally wanted one for the songs, and found a great one. All guitars are by yours truly while also having co-produced the record.

Our creative process was pretty simple. I'd go through chord progression/riff ideas I had and my mate through his beats, then we'd sit down by the computer and just start playing through them come what may. We would follow the song wherever it went while taking inspiration from the music we liked. The majority of the lead guitars and solos were improvised by looping the songs and their sections and playing a few takes. Also a lot of the basslines were done this way and the saxophone too.
The red line through the songs was that we wanted to be spontaneous and have fun, and record everything in the moment, trying to include as many "mistakes" as possible, as they always refer to something pure, rather than the music seeming too fake or pretentious from overthinking.

I wrote all of the songs. The initial inspiration is always a mystery and just arrives to me, then you start improvising from there and following the song until you get to it's final form and can put in the finalizing touches and tweaks. I try not to think and just let the ideas flow, which they always do. The lyrics came about like this, and when I had an idea what the song wanted to be, I'd tell the story and draw ideas from my own and others' life experiences.
