Bleib oder Geh

Bleib oder Geh

“Bleib oder Geh” (“Stay or Leave”) is an original German-language song written for my independent music project XS 0198.

The song explores the emotionally exhausting dynamic between someone who desperately wants closeness and a partner who repeatedly withdraws from it. It is about loving an emotionally avoidant person — someone who comes close enough to create hope, only to pull away again as soon as the connection becomes real.

At its core, the song deals with heartbreak, emotional dependency and the painful push-and-pull cycle that can develop when affection and uncertainty become inseparable. The narrator knows the situation is hurting her, yet remains emotionally attached to the possibility that this time the other person might finally stay.

The central phrase, “Bleib oder geh,” is deliberately simple and direct. It represents the point where longing turns into exhaustion: if you want to be here, then stay — but if you are going to disappear again, leave completely.

That apparent ultimatum also contains a contradiction. Asking someone to choose is an attempt to regain control, while emotionally still hoping they will choose you.

Lyrically, I wanted to avoid romanticizing this kind of instability. Instead, the song captures the psychological tension between knowing that a connection is unhealthy and still being unable to emotionally detach from it.

I wrote the lyrics, concept and song structure around this recurring conflict of closeness versus distance, using conversational German language, repetition and emotionally direct statements rather than overly abstract imagery.

“Bleib oder Geh” represents another central aspect of my songwriting: translating complicated relationship dynamics into simple phrases people might actually say in real life — while allowing vulnerability, frustration, longing and heartbreak to exist within a modern, danceable electronic production.
