The Fretfulness Darkroom

The Fretfulness Darkroom is a 17 track and 36 minutes long experimental hip-hop album written, performed, produced, recorded, edited, mixed and mastered entirely by me.
The record is heavily influenced by artists such as MF DOOM, J Dilla, Madlib, Nujabes and Biggie, but it constantly moves outside traditional hip-hop: across the album, boom bap, trap, electronic music, rock, orchestral textures and heavier, almost nu-metal inspired sections coexist inside the same continuous piece.

The album was conceived as a true continuum where the tracks flow directly into one another with virtually no silence, often using instrumental interludes, spoken-word samples, dialogue and transitional pieces to connect different sections. It was also designed with vinyl listening in mind, while still remaining uninterrupted in its digital version.
The production is deliberately dense and varied, with piano, acoustic and electric guitars, multiple types of synths and basses, strings, orchestral sounds, drums, percussion, sampled speech and other found sounds. Many tracks contain around 40 to 60 stems each and the album constantly changes tempo, key, arrangement, mood and musical language.

Lyrically, the project balances social criticism with more personal material. For example, it deals with political indifference toward vulnerable people, extreme economic inequality, climate change, the obsession with productivity and money, and the tendency of mainstream artists to market every new release as deeply personal while often repeating the same formulas.
At the same time, several tracks are much more intimate: childhood memories with my brother, past traumatic experiences treated through irony, anger toward a mental condition I still did not fully understand at the time, and a trap based skit built around a monologue with what I once called “God” and later came to understand as my own conscience.

The album was created over roughly five intense months during one of the hardest periods of my life, when I was spending most of my time isolated in my room. That room gradually became the symbolic “Fretfulness Darkroom” of the title: both the place where I felt trapped and the place where the entire record was developed.

More than anything else, The Fretfulness Darkroom is the project where all of my musical backgrounds finally started colliding with each other instead of being kept separate.
