Toxic Phantom
I wrote this song on the family heirloom piano that I grew up with. The piano was always a bit out of tune, and instead of fighting against the tuning, I let it guide me in writing something melancholic.
The chord progression came to me first, and from there, the words and melody were intuitive.
I have always seen this song as being open to interpretation. When I wrote it, I was using the relationship with the toxic phantom as a metaphor for posttraumatic evolution and integration of hardship.
However, I believe that the toxic phantom takes on different meanings to different people. This has always been one of my favorite songs that I've written, and the universal nature of it is a significant reason why.
